I am a neolibertarian minded individual who feels that freedom and individual rights take precedence over the wants of government. I believe government exists to serve the people and not to protect us from ourselves. I am an advocate for private firearms ownership, smaller government, reduced taxes and freedom to live your life however you choose, providing you do not directly hurt others.

The British Are Learning their Lesson

This just in from the TFS Magnum Blog:
After years of legislation virtually eliminating the right of self defense, 71% of the people polled in Great Britan would like to see a "Make My Day" style law giving people the "unqualified right to use force, including deadly force if necessary" against burglars. 81% percent feel that intruders should not be able to sue for anything that is done to them by people in defense of their homes and family.

I have been following the issue of self defense in the UK, and this poll marks a huge turn around in their attitude towards self defense laws. It is really a shame that it has taken a horrendous increase in crime before they came to the realization that self defense is a sacred and inalienable right and that the laws of the land should reflect this. Sadly, it will probably take a lot of time and tremendous effort to restore their self defense rights, as once people relinquish their rights it is incredibly difficult to get them back.

Since England has banned private firearms ownership in 1997 they have experienced the highest crime rates in 100 years. Since the gun ban and anti-self defense rules, 53% of England's home burglaries take place while people are home, unlike in the US where most burglaries occur when people are away (American burglars don't want to get shot). Murder in the UK was up 22% in the first year of the gun ban, gun related crimes went up over 35% a year, and more than one in four people have been victims of crime. In fact, the only other country with similarly high rates and similar culture is Australia, which has banned guns, swords and other things. Learn from the experiences of England and Australia, and support your defense and firearms rights lest the US experience suffer an equally terrible increase in crime and misery.
